Journal Entry

If you are interested in connecting with Operation IceBridge here are a few ways:

  • Simply follow my Operation IceBridge Journals which you are already doing :-) Pass the link along to all your friends!

  • Use NASA’s real-time flight tracker to follow the flights in real-time! Be sure to select the P-3B (NASA426) in the pull-down menu.

  • Classrooms can e-mail e.shaller [at] nserc.und.edu to gain access to live chatting with the team in flight. This is a very cool option for teachers and students!

Chatting with IceBridge I'm actually chatting with the IceBridge team as they flew near the North Pole. It was really exciting!
  • E-mail me at mmbuesing [at] gmail.com to sign up for a live connect event with me and a NASA scientist. Individuals can join in at times when I already have classrooms scheduled.
On the Sat PhoneI'm talking on a satellite phone. It uses the Iridium satellites in near-earth orbit. Can you hear me? Can you hear me now?

Question

The satellite that the sat phone uses is about 800 km above the earth. If the satellite is directly overhead, how long does the sat phone signal take to get up to the satellite. Assume the signal travels at 3x108 m/s and the satellite is directly overhead. Remember than 1 km = 1000 m.

Answer

2.7x10-3 seconds
