I left my house in Saint Clair Shores around noon on Dec. 30, 2016. I finally arrived in my hotel in Chirstchurch, New Zealand at around 3 PM on Jan 1, 2017. There were some time zone shenanigans though. I crossed over the international dateline (and was thus cheated out of a New Years Eve.) But it was about 30 hours of airports, shuttles, taxis, and planes. I'm a science nerd so I really did marvel at the geology that I passed over on the way.

Today we walked around Christchurch a bit. It is a fascinating city with a rich history. It has struggled to come back from a massive earthquake in 2010. But the city endures.

The people are friendly and the food is good but this is not a vacation. We are in Christchurch because it is here that the United States Antarctic Program takes care of many logistics. I am looking forward to tomorrow. We will be issued our Extreme Cold Weather gear. Stay Tuned!

The weather looks nice in New Zealand! Better enjoy it while it lasts...

Eric Thuma

I will. We have had 1 eighty degree day then 2 fifty five degree days. But I'll enjoy either until I hit the ice. Even thenit looks like it will be warmer than it is in my home town!

Good luck on your expedition. Hopefully the time difference will not interfere with your activities.

Eric Thuma

Thanks, Hassan. The timing on the flights worked out fairly well. The international flight came in so that it felt like I had stayed up until about 1 or 2 AM. The flight was 13 hours so i had plenty of time to sleep. Then when I arrived in New Zealand it was morning there. So I haven't felt jet lagged at all. Going back is probably going to be the hard part. I'm planing on doing our webinars at 7:30 in the morning. That's New Zealand time (McMurdo Station works on New Zealand time.) So that will be 1:30 PM back in Michigan.
