I left my house in Saint Clair Shores around noon on Dec. 30, 2016. I finally arrived in my hotel in Chirstchurch, New Zealand at around 3 PM on Jan 1, 2017. There were some time zone shenanigans though. I crossed over the international dateline (and was thus cheated out of a New Years Eve.) But it was about 30 hours of airports, shuttles, taxis, and planes. I'm a science nerd so I really did marvel at the geology that I passed over on the way.
Look at the erosional features in the mountains of New ZealandToday we walked around Christchurch a bit. It is a fascinating city with a rich history. It has struggled to come back from a massive earthquake in 2010. But the city endures.
Rebuilding a historic site in Christchurch Look the energy is measured in calories AND joules ... very civilized units. The people are friendly and the food is good but this is not a vacation. We are in Christchurch because it is here that the United States Antarctic Program takes care of many logistics. I am looking forward to tomorrow. We will be issued our Extreme Cold Weather gear. Stay Tuned!
