Today I am staying in the lab while the rest of the team goes to Heald Island. This is to give me a chance to get caught up on my paperwork. It is amazing how easy it is to get behind. I love writing my journal entries but they take a lot of time. I am also going to do a few errands. It is not a day off but it definitely feels like a little break. One of my errands was to go to the post office. I was thrilled to receive a package from Jillian Worssam. She is a PolarTREC teacher that went to the Arctic this summer and her trip was entitled Bering Ecosystem Study '08. You should read all about her adventures on a Coast Guard ship in the Bering Strait. Jillian sent chocolate which was much appreciated by my whole team. There is a limited selection of candy here. We have one store and many of the items are quite old. This is to be expected when you are in a place that gets only a few supply shipments.
There is only one store in town and the selection is very limited. There is also a limit of two items per day that you can buy.The package also included notes from Jillian's students. I was really touched to get these personal notes from kids that I have only communicated with via the internet.
The students at Project New Start in Flagstaff, Arizona were kind enough to send me postcards. How sweet! They also included some goofy postcards from Arizona. The plan is for me to send them postcards from Antarctica. I want to send a big THANK YOU to the students in Jillian Worssam's class at Project New Start. You all rock!
Well, if you all don't mind, I'm going to take a little break from my journal writing as well. I am heading to Heald Island tomorrow and I promise to give you a much more detailed account of my activities. It is always a good idea to take a little break. Then you come back fresh and ready to go.
