McMurdo Station has shut down for today and tomorrow.

Is it severe cold? Is it because of severe winds? Is it a white out? No, it is two days of holidays to celebrate the New Year. Part of the celebration is the IceStock music festival with it’s outdoor stage and chili and snack booths.

None of the required training sessions are happening until the 1st. Since no services are available the AWS team is sorting through materials that they shipped down and some supplies that they have left here.

I walk around McMurdo to get oriented to be able to find my way around. On the back porch of the National Science Foundation’s (NSF) chalet are the flags of original 13 countries signing the Antarctic Treaty. Behind the flags is Observation Hill, where a cross stands in honor of Robert Falcon Scott who died on his way back from the South Pole.

Below the chalets I see some of the helicopters that we will be using to travel out to weather stations.
