Last night all the polar trekkers went on a field excursion to the Chena Hot Springs. The 50 mile drive passed through the Boreal forest, also known as the spruce/moose biome. It was appropriate that on the way we saw moose and a beautiful full moon. The springs were awesome. The hot, geothermal water contrasted with the -20ยบ air temperature to create thick fog. The cold caused our hair to freeze in seconds and resulted in some nice hair styles! If there were not so many people at the springs, I wonder if wildlife would come enjoy the water?

John, you forgot to mention that we had the most capable chauffeur who maneuvered ice packed forest roads and the occasional curious moose. Thanks again.

How big was the Moose?

Are there any animals that interact with the environment around the hot springs, or in the hot springs itself?

Andre Wille

It was grande. I did not see any bull moose, which are larger, but the cow moose we saw was huge, especially since it was in the road and it
was very icy!

Andre Wille

I don't know for sure, but there is a lot of human activity nearby which probably scares them away. I bet before it was developed animals spent
time there, like they do at the Yellowstone hot springs. In the water
itself? I don't really want to know, I did feel some slithering around
my toes.....
