Journal Entry

Quickly Dropping Temperatures

My travel north to Fairbanks was marked by increases in latitude and decreases in temperature. When I left California, Livermore was a balmy 54 degrees with rain. By Seattle, the temperature dropped twenty degrees and rain turned to snow. I shivered after walking from the airplane. The shivering made me nervous! If I was cold at 30 degrees, how would I feel in below zero temperatures? A few hours later, Anchorage's temperature was 22. I added another layer of shirts. Temperature fell another 30 degrees by the time I arrived in Fairbanks. My nose hairs froze when walking in the -13 degree air to the cab.

Hi, Dave. Thanks for the email and for so quickly reading my journal. At 8:30 PM, the humidity is 69% and temperature is -20. Skies are clear,
but the roads and sidewalks are covered with a packed layer of snow.
This summer I plan to find a way to use the water probes for research
and have my students duplicate the work back home. Thanks for your help
with water quality assessment! Look where it lead me!

Regina, thank you for the journal postings. Is it okay with you if I share this with my peers at work?Take care. I would say, "Stay warm," but ...
Enjoy the adventure!

Thank you for the email and asking about sharing the posts. Yes, please do share! I'm thrilled that you will pass the link forward. One purpose
of the journal is to communicate information about polar science to a
large audience.

Thank you, PH! I will also be sharing information at Science Odyssey next week.
