Short Answer: Many Layers!

Tonight's dinner was a quick ten minute walk from the hotel. However, in -18 degree temperatures, quick is not the same thing as easy. Here's a list of what I wore to walk to the restaurant.

  • Heat Tech tights by UniQlo
  • Jeans
  • Wool socks
  • Ugg boots
  • Heat Tech top by UniQlo
  • Wool turtleneck sweater
  • Wool hoodie jacket
  • Down Coat
  • Wool Scarf
  • Balaklava
  • Mittens (not gloves so that my fingers would stay together and be warmer)
  • No glasses. I learned to keep my glasses off after the condensation on them froze during last night's walk. Several minutes were needed for that ice to melt.
Layers of clothingMany layers of clothing are needed to walk in -18º weather.

I was still chilled after arriving back at the hotel. Tomorrow, I'll add a second down coat.

Hello Regina!
I had no idea you were headed off for such an adventure!
Wool seems to be your best friend. ;)
I can't even imagine the cold....must be painful at times.
Take good care, and know that warm Livermore awaits for you with it's high of 70 today.
We all miss you.

Thanks for sharing! This is AMAZING!

Thank you for the email and conversation! My fingers did start to hurt after being exposed to the cold. I was taking photographs during a sunny
lunchtime walk in -13 degree temperatures and had to take my mitten off
to snap a picture. Even though I quickly put the mitten back on, I
stopped taking pictures after about ten shots because my fingers were
just too cold.

Livermore will be about 80 degrees warmer than Fairbanks today!

Welcome to Fairbanks, glad we could put on a cold snap for you :) That is a nice description of what it takes to get you around town in these temps. I think it should be a little warmer when you come back through this summer on the way to Toolik.

Hi, Carol. Thank you for reading the journal. I'm glad to experience the cold snap! It would have been disappointing to visit and have weather
similar to what I've lived in. Thanks for hosting the delicious lunch today.
