Caribou Stew is the BEST! This comes straight from someone who doesn't eat whole lot of meat. Amazing, especially on a cold day!
4th of July is a 3 day celebration here in Barrow complete with a parade, events and lots of food!
Some of the events included kids games of egg tossing and football. The adult games included traditional seal skin whaling boat races and tug of war (women against men!). But let’s get back to the food…typical food booths at fairs in the lower 48 usually include chicken, pork, cotton candy, hot dogs. The food booths at the Barrow celebration included some of the typical fare but included the most amazing varieties of Caribou that you could imagine! They were all hunted by the locals and prepared by the women of the community. Rob and I had Caribou (Tutu) Stew, Caribou over rice with gravy and Caribou Teriyaki.
Rob and I share a plate of Aalluuttagaaq. Perfect for a chilly 4th of July weekend.
While we only had a short time to spend at the festivities, it was a wonderful cultural and culinary experience.
Question: What is the difference between a Caribou and a Reindeer?
Bird of the Day
There was a whole flock of these beauties hanging around a lake at the BEOYummy from the top of the world!
