Journal Entry

When can I see you again Can my heart beat again, baby When can I see you again And when can I breathe once again And when can I see, babe, again

**Happy three years! Love You.

Jose Luciani**

The **life **of a research scientist.

Jose is 21 years old and will spend his 3rd year anniversary of dating **his beloved Gretel in Barrow while she is in Miami. Jose has been in Barrow for one **month and will not be returning to Miami until mid to late August.

Welcome to the life of a science researcher. True it seems that most of the people I have met are single, possibly over 80%. But there are many that aren’t and it IS hard on both ends.

I talked with Steve Oberbauer and Paulo Olivas about this. They are both married and devoted husbands. Not only are they both married, but both married to scientists who travel as equally as they do. They survive and they get by with phone calls, emails, letters and possibly skypes. Sometimes phone calls are challenging because of time differences or lack phone service. In fact for a good part of the time that Paulo was here in the Arctic, his wife was gathering water in Ecuador.

They talk about their spouses a lot too. It is nice and refreshing to know that these guys are good guys, loyal and caring. Paulo has an anniversary coming up too, but this year his wife Beth will join him in Barrow.

Beth and Paulo OlivasHappy Anniversery to Paulo and Beth

For me, I had my reservations about coming all the way up here, while being apart from Rob for more than 2 weeks or 3 weeks. Last year I cruised on a NOAA Teacher at Sea expedition for only 2 weeks and it was manageable. But 4 weeks…oh I didn’t know about that. But Rob supported me and encouraged me to come and luckily it worked out for him to be here too. This is an opportunity of a LIFE TIME.

It was a little bit of an adjustment to have him here too. I work here nonstop. I just do. And quite honestly I like it! I joke about my VORTEX computer, but I do like writing and managing photos. Of course I love helping with the scientific data in the tundra too.

Yes, I do eat dinner and find a moment here or there to snap photos of birds, but I work a lot. That didn’t change too much when Rob got here, but it was hard to see him after 3 weeks and continue to work this hard. I am THRILLED that Rob is here. I have loved **sharing **this part of my life with him. I also look forward to our Alaska vacation that we will begin next week.

So Gretel – Happy Anniversary to you, from not only Jose, but from **me too. **

He is quite a guy, very hard working, non-complaining, smart and a good teacher too. Although we do give him a hard time, just for the heck of it!

He speaks very highly of you. It is good of you to support him and to encourage him. What he is doing up here does make a difference! He is a great help to Paulo and will continue to be when I leave this weekend.

I only met Jose for minutes in April before Barrow. I am not sure at what stage of development he was at that time. But I can assure you of this, if he left as a boy, you will find quite the man returning to you in August!

He even knows how to do laundry now! And he can stay up all night to WORK!

PS - I really don't know the guy in the photo. The Jose I know has a burly beard, longer hair, wears water boots and probably smells a little different from the guy in the photo!/p>
