Yesterday was my first full day in Barrow and even though the day started out rather uneventful, things really picked up after lunch. BASC (Barrow Arctic Science Consortium) opened its new science building, with much hoopla. Alaskan Senator, Ted Stevens was here to do the ribbon cutting along with Inupiat elder, Kenny Toovak. Both men were born in 1923.

This was followed by an open house at the facility, a prayer by Kenny Toovak, and then remarks by several dignitaries, including Senator Stevens. This was followed by presentations from some of the researchers working here at BASC.

Once the presentations were over, most everyone headed to Barrow’s Inupiat Heritage Cultural Center. They celebrated the grand opening with dance, food, and more speeches. We got back to BASC and worked until late. There is lots to do and lots to learn.
