Journal Entry

On Tuesday, I was working hard at my desk when I kept getting someone from the museum stopping by and saying, "You’ve got a package upstairs.” I figured by the third time I was interrupted, I realized I’d have to go and get the package because I had a feeling it must have been from VECO. Everyone had been dying to see what I was going to be given to wear. By the time I got upstairs, I could see why everyone wanted to tell me about my package. It was a HUGE duffel bag. So I took it back downstairs and actually it was more like dragged it down there and you would have thought I’d gotten a present. Everyone came by checking out my parka, gloves, boots, and everything in between.

I decided if grown adults were so excited, I knew my after school program students would just love it. So I decided to make my last session with them before heading out focused on the Arctic. I greeted them as usual and began by having them brainstorm what would they pack if their parents were doing research in the Arctic for a year and taking them too. I had some great suggestions and then I couldn’t resist bringing out that HUGE bag to let them explore and try on. They had a ton of fun and the one comment I got from them most was, "Ms. Robyn you are gonna be so cold!!”

Jr and Derick try on some of the gear that I will be wearing to keep warm and dry.

I even had them decorate Styrofoam cups which was suggested by Samantha Barlow, 2006 PolarTREC teacher, during our logistics call. They had a ton of fun and I think they are going to miss me.
