Journal Entry

I woke up on Saturday morning excited, nervous, and running down the list of last minute items I needed to somehow stuff into my bags. I could have sworn they weighed over 50 pounds each, even Rusty agreed. Then just as the door was swung open I was blinded by the whiteness. Here it was, 7 AM and there was snow all over the place. I thought …geez, as if I won't see enough of this stuff in Alaska.

I know April showers bring May flowers, but snow showers? I don't think so.

I got to the airport and even though we struggled with those bags they each only weighed in at a mere 37 pounds. I couldn't believe it! I thought well, that's 26 pounds of stuff I can buy and stuff into the bags for my return. So all my friends and family, you've got 26 pounds worth of gifts coming your way. As I continued moving west, the temperatures rose and the weather became sunny. Even Seattle was nice and sunny; unfortunately the Seattle Mariners were feeling my disbelief as their game against the Cleveland Indians was called because of snow. I called my Dad and he even told me that it would be warmer in Anchorage than in Dayton.

As if the temperature wasn't enough, I called Rusty, my fiancé, who then proceeded to tell me you know we only have three more months before our wedding. I was like and that's supposed to cheer me up and reduce my stress. At least I am far enough away that my Mom and sisters can just handle most of those wedding worries. After all, what do you need the bride for except the dress and picking out the colors? I have faith everything else will come together. So if you are following my journey, you should know a little bit more about me. Yes, I am getting married and I am looking as forward to that journey as I am the one I'm starting today. I left Charlotte, NC this summer after teaching for seven years at Myers Park High School. Besides changing states, I changed careers too. I am now the Earth and Life Sciences Coordinator at the Boonshoft Museum of Discovery. I am still teaching but now I get to teach from preK-12. I love it!!! It has been a great transition for me to challenge myself and to have their support as I explore the Bering Ecosystem for the next 35 days or so.
