Journal Entry
LMG Chief EngineerMike, the chief engineer has been working the Gould for almost a decade.

Well, I’m going to cheat a little today (or perhaps you could look at it as a two-for-one deal) and direct you to my 2011 blog on the engine room. The engine room is truly one of the most amazing parts of the ship. Chief Engineer Mike is still on the job and the engine room is as beautiful and well run as ever. And I continue to learn more each time I venture down there. Here’s the link to my last blog on the engine room. http://www.polartrec.com/expeditions/biology-of-antarctic-fishes/journals/2011-04-19 I strongly recommend you check it out to get a fuller view of the engine room. Today I am focusing on a particular aspect. All those pipes!! They are everywhere and each provides a specific pathway for the something that flows – fuel, sewage, dirty water, potable water (great word – look it up), seawater, and more. To keep it all straight there is a color key in the engine room and they color code the entries in the logbook so that when an engineer comes on to duty, he will know what has been done and what to look for.

Engineer's logbookThe logbook has a color-coded key to insure precise monitoring and safe operations. Engineer logbookEach engineer must color code his notes while on duty so that the person that relieves him will have a full report on what has been done or will need to be done.

So rather than creating a duplicate blog I am challenging you to find and identify all the various pipes and what is running through them. I’m posting the color code sheet you can use for reference. See how many examples you can find. Adventure on the high seas is just a click away! Let me know how many different pipes you find.
