Orientation today was packed with many meaningful and fun activities. Beginning with the alumni performing a skit on ‘life in the field’ to practicing how the use an Iridium phone, to visiting the warehouse at CH2MHill and getting a glimpse of the clothing that will be available to use in the Arctic field, this day was as busy as it gets!
To top it all off however, we were treated with a visit to the BP World Ice Art Championships being held right here in Fairbanks. For the entry fee of one hundred dollars and a lot of enthusiasm you can enter in this competition along with more than 180 other exhibits.
One of the exhibitsThere are folks here from all over the world, and the art sculptures are just as varied as the people who are working on them. There are figures of birds and other animals, along with familiar objects such as telephone booths, park benches, and windmills. There are also figures of people playing basketball and windsurfing. You can walk through a maze of castle walls, crawl through an ice tunnel, or slide down some pretty cool ice slides.
Beautiful work!Watching the people work on some of the figures is very fascinating. It takes a lot of skill and patience to complete one of these sights. This event takes place from February 22 through March 27, and is worth your time to come and see!
