Many hours were spent today connecting the SWC's and the CO2 Flux Chambers to the instruments, the "brain", that will analyze and record the data. We also moved all of the solar panels, placed them on their platforms, and wired them to the batteries that will run the whole show for the summer. We are hoping to test the systems out tomorrow for any leaks in the compressor or lines, and then make sure that the electronics are working and that the arms on the chambers are opening and closing the doors as they should. Once we get all of that done the experiment will be officially underway! That should be Monday, which is when we are planning to declare it to be "Flag Day" and raise the school flags over the study site. It should be a wonderful day filled with scientists, teachers, and millions of tundra critters! The moose and the caribou have been invited also, but we shall see if they attend. Bears are optional!
I wanted to share the school flags that were given to me before I left for this expedition. Each flag great and unique! All of the flags show the character of our schools, teachers, and students of the Fountain Valley School District. And all of them reflect the enthusiasm and the energy kids have for science!
