How does one prepare for research in the Arctic? Sessions on "logistics" have included topics such as safety, gear, clothing, what to do in case of a bear encounter, and using a satellite phone to communicate from remote areas. Although some topics may seem to be mundane, each is a critical component of preparing for travel and research in the Arctic or Antarctic. This preparation helps to keep everyone on a research expedition safe so we can better focus on the science at hand.

Success!Sandra Thornton successfully gets into a mustang suit.

While on the USCGC Healy I will have plenty of opportunities to wear a mustang survival suit, and today I was able to try one on. I got lots of advice, including "it's easier if you are lying down", but it was still pretty tough to get the suit on and zipped up; even tougher to work in the suit. Mustang suits provide warmth and flotation in case one ends up in the water. Although the suit is bulky and difficult to move in, it's good to know that I will have this extra level of help in case of emergency.

My interest about Alaska has always been amazement, awe, curiosity, and reverence. Looking forward to this opportunity to learning more, especially now I have a personal connection on the 2016 PolarTREC team-Sandra Thornton, fellow teacher, and fellow Teachers for Global Classrooms alumn.
