Evacuation Insurance, Boots, and Base Layers In about six weeks I will be on the USCGC Healy headed to the Chukchi Sea, and I am feeling a bit overwhelmed with all that must be accomplished between now and departure. I have participated in pre-field calls, finished up much of the documentation required, and have begun making packing lists. Because temperatures are likely to be quite different from the usual summer afternoons in a shady spot on my deck, I am preparing by gathering clothes that may be easily layered as conditions change. Although there is a small store aboard ship, I need to anticipate and pack what I will need for six weeks at sea. Things that will remind me of home, keep me comfortable, and allow me to accomplish the work ahead. Chargers, batteries, warm socks, gloves, sunscreen, lip balm, the list continues. Each week my post office box is filled with various items I have ordered, and the UPS truck has been a regular at my house. What about that "evacuation insurance"? This is in case I become ill or am injured and need to get to a hospital - a backup plan I hope I never have to use!
Question of the Day
What is something you would make sure to pack if you were going on a six-week science journey? Why would you take the item you chose?
