Journal Entry

When it comes to fishing I have always been a half-hearted fanatic. I've got a couple of nice rods and reels, but could never be bothered to tie my own flies. I truly enjoy standing in a stream or river casting till past dusk, but can not be bothered to purchase a fishing license most years. So when Mike suggested we spend an extra day in Yellowknife fishing on the Great Slave Lake on our way to the ship... I was all in–mostly.

Fishy Smile!Here fishy fishy....

Lots of fish in the Great Slave Lake but its the Northern Pike that our guide Carlos figured we'd be interested in. Once he got us set up casting perpendicular to the port side of the boat, and finished berating us for having our rod tips to high, it did not take long for a solid tug on our lines to get us focused. We spent the next five hours catching and releasing some of the largest fish I've ever been associated with. Monstrous eating machines that are at the top of the food chain – the Ursus arctos horribilis of Great Slave Lake.

If you look closely you can see the tail of an eaten fish showing at the back of the mouth of this beast! Glad to see you smiling under a clear, smoke-free sky!

Holy giant pike! Those are some amazing-looking fish. Are they just a game fish or do people eat them? Looks like you had nice weather for your fishing expedition...
