For today's journal, we (the "Wormherders") will demonstrate the process we will be using to extract animals from Antarctic soil samples. As an added bonus, Dr. Powers will show one of the animals he found, a tardigrade. More to come about the specifics of tardigrades and nematodes in future journals.

Dr Adams demonstrates the animal extraction process
Here is a 15-minute video of Dr. Adams explaining how the animal extraction process works. He does a really good job explaining the process. There are many steps to the process, but nothing really complicated. The soil he is processing just came into the lab today. It is from one of his world famous science friends, who is a scientist for the Antarctic SALSA (Subglacial Antarctic Lakes Scientific Access) project. These scientists drilled thousands of feet into the ice, reaching a lake below, lowered a ROV (remotely operated vehicle), and collected video and samples. This stuff is amazing!
