Last Minute Preparations

A few essentials for the trip.A few essentials for the trip.

It's hard to believe that I will be leaving for my trip in just 3 days!! When I got accepted for the PolarTREC program back in December, I was very excited. But, it seemed like the expedition itself was SO far in the future. In the months since then, I have done a lot to prepare, including the orientation in Alaska, going through the physical qualification process, several video conferences, a trip to Dartmouth, and lots of reading up on the science behind the project.

I have also been slowly getting things that I think I'll need while in the field. Living in Florida for about 10 years now means that I had gotten rid of most of my winter gear. Thankfully, I will be provided with the extreme cold weather gear I need. But, I still had to find some of the personal gear (such as long underwear, which, by the way, doesn't seem to be sold too many places around here!).

It'll actually take a few days for me to get to Summit Station, Greenland. I'll be flying to Albany, NY and then to Kangerlussuaq, Greenland before heading out on the ice sheet. So, today I started packing up the bag that I won't need until I get to Summit Station.

Holy cow Steve - You are an efficient packer! Maybe next year we should have a demonstration on packing during Orientation and you can be our guest speaker! ;) Safe Travels to Greenland!

I can't tell you how much time I've spent trying to figure out just what to bring. Hopefully I didn't forget anything!

First, I loved the video. No surprise you fit everything in on suitcase! Second, cannot wait to follow your exploits and learn more about the Greenland ice sheet! Good luck!

Thanks, Mark! Now I just hope I have everything I'll need. I am so excited that I'll be on my way in less than 24 hours :)

Have an amazing time. Enjoy yourself it will be over in a blink of the eye. If you get a chance go to the Thai Restaurant in Kanger. Their curry are good. And if you eat at the Airport get one of the danish they are amazing!
