Today Roy Stehle from SRI International in San Francisco came to Fairbanks to teach us how to use satellite phones on our expeditions. We'll use these not only for phone calls but also to send emails and even photos. Roy says these phones are basically cell phones, but instead of using cell towers on hills to transmit our signals, we use passing overhead satellites to transmit our data. I was able to call home and say hello to my wife, Kitty in Denver. I could even hear our baby boy, Holt, in the background. Luckily Kitty's parents, Gregg and Kathy, drove up from Oklahoma City to help out with the baby while I'm away. Thanks for helping Kitty you guys! Love from Fairbanks!

Practice sat-phone callToday we are learning to use the satellite phones. We will use these this summer from our remote research field camps not only for calls, but also to send email and photos.
