Christmas time. It brings to mind images of Christmas trees, stockings, Santa, and presents. Depending on where you live, it might also make you think of snow. Even though most of us are thousands of miles away from home, we still long for the familiar Christmas surroundings. Residents of McMurdo have been busy this week decorating around town for Christmas. I still haven't heard carols being played on any radios, but I'm sure by the end of the week we'll be hearing those as well.
McMurdo's Own Santarctica!
In McMurdo, there's a Christmas event called Santarctica. Around the station there are a wide assortment of costumes. During Santarctica, all those with a Christmas theme are pulled out of storage. They put out a station-wide call for those who are interested to gather and take holiday photos around the station. As you can imagine, you get some pretty creative characters participating.
Ivan the Terra Bus becomes Ivan the Merry Bus
Decorations have gone up on electricity poles around town. In Crary Lab, many of the display cabinets are sporting Christmas themed decorations. Much as you'd expect, penguins are a popular motif around here. With all of the activity going on, it's nice to have these reminders of the season.
