June 30, 2008 – Monday - Declination
We were able to get a few hours of work in yesterday and the night crew took over last night until the wind picked up and shut down camp…again. It is hard to explain the incessant wind. You get used to it, but only to a point. If you are walking with your back to the wind it can be a welcome walking aide, if you are walking to the wind…you grit your teeth and hope your clothing and your skin are still intact when you arrive at your destination. I decided to turn the camera onto movie mode and shoot a short clip to share what life is like with our friend (and foe)…the wind.
(Once again…it may take a while to load the video…but if you are patient, you will be transported to an alien world where ice and wind rule and humans beg for mercy at their feet…well…that might be a little over exaggerated… Actually, you will see me walking around the outside of Sat Camp as the wind builds the snow drifts higher and higher and the flags of Sat Camp slap in the wind.)

Because we were shut in once again, I figured I would make use of my time by working on some student developed experiments that I am to perform while in Greenland. Today, I worked on the Compass and GPS Experiment where the class instructed me to compare magnetic north with "true” north. You can see all of the results by clicking here.
The magnetic declination of Summit Greenland is 31 degrees.Food Update:
Lunch: Last week’s left-leftovers. For dessert: Huge pie pan sized chocolate chip cookies…yum!
Dinner: Chinese; Rice, Pot Stickers, Stir Fry with pork, Stir Fried Veggies, Cucumber Salad, and warm-steaming-juicy-gooey brownies.
Tomorrow is the first day of JULY and it is CANADA DAY! Our local Canadian, Tara, has plans to teach us all the Canadian National Anthem and for dinner we will snack on a Canadian favorite: Poutine. I promise to share all the details tomorrow!
Stay Warm!!
PS. Sorry I didn't get this journal out at the "regular" time...I had to deal with internet problems until 2:30 am...
