Hello everyone, I thought it would be fun to take you shopping in Barrow. Would you pay $10.49 for a gallon of milk? Or how about $5.19 for a dozen eggs or over $12 dollars for orange juice. These are just a few examples of what it’s like to shop in a remote location. Barrow has a big, beautiful shopping center with all the products you’d normally see back home – just with a bigger price tag. The reason is because everything is flown in or arrives by barge. This center is a one stop shop complete with furniture, clothes, and even ATV’s.

Sian- that's crazy! I want to pick up an ATV on my next trip to the grocery. Hey- I bet I can beat some of those food prices here in Spitsbergen. Extremely high prices for some wilted produce. But that didn't stop us from making spaghetti and fishballs for dinner last night!

Hi Peggy - glad to see you are settling in. The prices are interesting because it makes you rethink what you want to buy. Spaghetti is good and cheap but surprisingly, the biggest bang for your buck here has been the already cooked rotisserie chicken. Fishballs sound interesting. Are they backed or deep fried?
