Journal Entry

Today was our last Polar Club meeting until I return from the ice.

Mr. League's Postcard

I was eager to share a postcard Mike League sent us all the way from Antarctica! The Polar Club was excited to read the card, especially after reading so many of Mr. League's journals and skyping with him in Antarctica.

The postcard shows the Nathaniel B. Palmer research vessel docking at McMurdo Station.

Postcard from McMurdoPolar Club receives a postcard from McMurdo Station thanks to fellow PolarTREC teacher, Michael League.

Look carefully at the postage mark -- you can see it says "McMurdo" on it!

Saying Goodbye

The Polar Club surprised me with a card. We spent some time talking about what we've enjoyed about Polar Club so far. Here are some of the things that the students said:

We took a group photo for me to take to Antarctica with me as well. Notice the blue card I'm holding--the Polar Club made it for me, it contains many well-wishes!

Questions

  • If you were going to Antarctica, who would you want to say goodbye to before you left?

MATH CONNECTION

  • Look back at the photo showing the post mark from Mr. League's postcard. If I received the card on November 1, how long did it take to get here?

  • If the distance between McMurdo station and O.Henry Middle School (where the letter arrived) is 13,420 km, calculate the average speed it took the letter to arrive.
