Clothing Time

Today my research team and I went to the CDC (the Clothing Distribution Center) to pick up our ECW (Extreme Cold Weather) Gear. I sat in the front seat of the shuttle bus and it was an exciting ride. Check out the video below--notice anything strange about the driving?

When my research team and I arrived at the CDC we had a brief orientation about safety and how to prepare for our flight tomorrow. Then we separated into our dressing rooms and tried on our all the gear. This is a very important part of preparing for the ice. You have to make sure everything fits right, otherwise you could be stuck out in the cold with uncomfortable or incorrect gear. There were a lot of different items to try on. Once I was all suited up I was very warm. Look at all the layers I had to wear!

The CDC

The CDC provides ECW gear for about 3000 people from August to February. They have hundreds of Big Red jackets and other gear. I was allowed to take a look at the inventory. Seeing the rows and rows of coats, pants and boots made me realize just how many people have gone through the same journey I am going through and stepped in my shoes (literally)

Guy Calveit was very helpful at getting me the right gear. He's from New Zealand, but is a Steelers fan, just like me!

After making sure I had everything I needed, I packed my ECW gear into two orange bags. One has the important gear I will need on the C-17 tomorrow (it's a cold flight), the other has the gear I will be using when I'm at McMurdo and the AGO site. I also left my own bag to be checked. Besides a few small items, this is what I'll be bringing to Antarctica.
