Thanksgiving Festivities

Although Thanksgiving was two days ago in the U.S., we celebrated it today. Even though it wasn't officially Thanksgiving, it still felt festive and special here at the station.

Turkey Trot

I started the day with a Turkey Trot -- a 5K race that goes from McMurdo Station up to Scott Base (the nearby New Zealand station) and back.

Map of Turkey TrotThe Turkey Trot begins in front of the Chapel in McMurdo Station and goes up to Scott Base and back for a total distance of 5 kilometers.

I hadn't run in a while and so I hit the road slow and steady and eventually made it to the finish line right after Carl. I was in 80th place. Terry came in 4th place! It is a fun race, especially because runners often dress up in silly costumes.

The Big Meal

There are four different seatings for Thanksgiving dinner in the galley at McMurdo Station. My research team, along with the divers and other friends, ate our meal at three o'clock. We got in line early to make sure we could be seated all together. There was live music to entertain us while we waited.

The galley chefs and staff work really hard to prepare a special meal for us on Thanksgiving. There were special side dishes, meats, desserts, and of course, plenty of turkey.

Side dishesSide dishes like roasted vegetables, green bean casserole, mashed potatoes, polenta with portobello mushrooms are eagerly dished out for Thanksgiving dinner. dessertsA variety of pies are made for dessert. Turkey and SteakSteak and Turkey are carved and served for Thanksgiving dinner.

Although I am far away from my family, it is nice to look around the table and feel at home with my research family and friends. It was a lovely meal and a special day here at the station.

Hut Point After Dinner

After dinner, my research team has a tradition of going for a walk to Hut Point. We passed by Discovery Hut and headed up to Hut Point, which overlooks McMurdo Sound. Although it was very windy and cold, it felt good to go for a walk after a big meal.

Helping Out

After our walk, Carl and I volunteered to wash dishes in the galley. It felt good to volunteer and it gave me a sense of just how hard people work in the galley to clean up after us.

whats it like to not spend thanksgiving without your family

Retta J

how can you stand to be in the cold for so long, and have to were a jacket ever time you go outside.

How long does it take for your spit to freeze?

Terry

We use watches and clocks to tell the time. Night time is also a little cooler than daytime so that tell's us a little also.

status: 1Although I have not tested this, I believe it would take a bit of time for
my spit to freeze here. Of course it depends on temperature. When the same
question was posed to a scientist at NOVA, they said they thought it would
freeze instantly at -50 degrees F!

status: 1Hi Retta,
It's amazing what you can become acclimated to over time. For example, when
I lived in Texas, I could not get used to how hot it was outside! At first
it felt too cold outside here, although with jackets, hats and mittens it
feels nice and warm! After a while you get so used to wearing a jacket on
your way outside that it isn't a hassle at all. I keep my hat, sunglasses,
neck warmer and mittens all together in my coat pockets, so I have
everything I need when I get outside!

status: 1Hi Eric,
It was hard to not be with my family for Thanksgiving. Luckily McMurdo
Station does a really nice job making Thanksgiving special and my research
team was like a second family to me!

status: 1Hi Pattyann,
Thank you so much for the welcome! I'm very excited to come home.
Antarctica was amazing, and it definitely felt different to be there a
second time. I'm still here--but am about to head down to the ice runway to
fly to New Zealand! I hope to see you soon!

Write more, thats all I have to say. Literally, it seems as though you relied on the video to make your point. You definitely know what youre talking about, why waste your intelligence on just posting videos to your weblog when you could be giving us something enlightening to read
