Did you guess what we ate for our holiday dinner? I couldn't believe that we ate lobster for dinner! Even though it wasn't fresh lobster, it was still a delicious, special treat!
We had our special dinner on the 24th, so our camp staff, including our cooks, could have a two day weekend. Despite the holiday, we still drilled on Christmas Day. Given our short season, ice cores are considered presents around here! Every day is a celebration when the drill is up and running smoothly!
Even though we are on a tight schedule, we still managed to have a nice holiday. The WAIS family currently includes 37 people. We ate our meal together and had a gift exchange. It was a fun, relaxing night.
Even though all of the folks here are my WAIS family, I miss my family back home. For many of us in camp, this is a difficult time to be away from home. For example, my brother, who lives in Zanzibar, flew back to the United States to celebrate the holiday with my family. I haven't seen him in over a year! I really wish I could be in two places at once.
I hope you all had a wonderful holiday! I am sending lots of holiday cheer from Antarctica!
Our holiday tree with presents for our camp gift exchange. The lobster and fresh salad were the highlights of our special holiday meal. Holiday cheer Heidi! I was lucky enough to get a shower before our nice meal. I also wore a dress and sweater- a nice change from long underwear and work clothes!
