Design an Expedition Flag

Whether you’re a talented artist or just love to color, this is the contest for you. Winners will see their flag flown at the South Pole!

Follow these steps to enter:

Step 1: Download & Create

Download a flag template here.

In the provided area, design and (hand) draw a flag that you think best represents Antarctica, Antarctic Research, or this expedition. Some ideas might include a map of Antarctica, IceCube Research Station, penguins and other Antarctic wildlife, or the countries in the Antarctic Treaty.

Here are a few suggestions as you design your flag:

  • Keep the design simple and uncluttered
  • Use two or three basic colors
  • If you use words, make sure they're legible
  • Be creative about how you can best represent Antarctica
  • Make it your own, unique design!

Step 2: Mail or Email it!

Submit your entry, with your name and return mailing address, to:

Kate Miller 1103 C St. SE Apt. 23 Washington D.C. 20003

Or scan your design and email it, with your name and return mailing address, to: kmiller [at] polartrec.com

All entries must be received by Monday, December 12, 2016

Unfortunately, I can’t be responsible for lost or late mail. Please be sure to get me your entries on time and send me your correct return address.

Step 3: Follow this Journal!

Five winning designs will be selected by members of the expedition team.

Winners will be announced in my journals. Photos of the winning flags flying at the South pole will also be posted in my journals. Follow along here:

After the expedition, I’ll send the winners their flag back along with some Antarctica goodies.

I look forward to seeing your amazing designs!

Can't wait to see the winning flags! Will you show us some of the other entries too?

Kate Miller

Absolutely! I plan on posting an "honorable mentions" sections for those designs that didn't make the top 5 winners but were still exceptional flags!

Kylie

Hi!! I was wondering where I could find the flag contest winners?

Kate Miller

Hi Kylie! Thanks for your question. Since submissions are still being accepted through this evening, we have not yet determined the winners. The research team will need some time to review the designs we've received and make the final decision. The winners will be announced in a journal post (here!) while I'm at the South Pole (likely mid-January), so follow along to see if your design is chosen!
