A penguin at the South Pole

I hope that title wasn't too misleading. No, friends, there are no penguins here at the South Pole, except for one!

Jocelyn update
This morning I roamed the halls of the South Pole Station, penguin and camera in hand. I took a lot of videos and photos for upcoming outreach events for Jargie the Science Girl!. Just my usual antics. I love meeting new people every day, but I'm also glad to have my buddy with me.

Science update
I toured the SPICE Core camp, about 2 miles from the station. SPICE Core is a subproject within IceCube that is deploying devices up to 1.75km into the ice to measure and characterize different ice properties. The project is just about ready to begin taking measurements; we are just waiting on a winch (to be brought on an incoming flight).

Although two miles from the station, and out in -30 degree F weather, the SPICE Core camp is quite cozy. There is a structure with walls and ceilings made of plastic that is naturally heated by the sun. It's so nice in there some team members hang out in a t-shirt and jeans!

In the next couple of days, I'll be training with the SPICE Core crew and learning more about their loggers (the devices ready to deploy into the ice). The three loggers I'll be learning about measure absorption and scattering of UV light, luminescence, and Continuous Waves. I'll hopefully be able to lend a hand once the project begins and help everyone catch up since we've been delayed by the winch.
