The other city that never sleeps

Jocelyn update
It might just be the extreme cold weather gear talking, but I think I’m getting used to this cold thing. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve still got skin as thin as any native Southern Californian, but I’m managing much better than I thought I would. My expectations of the cold are getting closer to the actual cold of the day. The actual temperature isn’t always indicative of how cold it will be. If it’s overcast, even a “warm day” can feel much harsher than 10 degrees colder on a sunny day. I’m also understanding how many and which layers of clothing keep me warm and comfortable. I don’t know how I’ll feel when I get back to California’s warm winter but right now I feel like a full-fledged Polie!

Science update
SPICE Core is on a tight schedule. The winch has been working nearly 24 hours a day, lowering and raising loggers out of the ice. For safety reasons, there are always at least two people at SPICE Core, so I’ve been filling in whenever a second person is needed. Aside from recording data accurately, watching over the winch is a big task. As we pull loggers up from the ice, the wire on the winch wraps around the drum. Every few meters, the wire gets wrapped slightly off. If we don’t fix it, that small wrapping error becomes huge later on and could even damage the wire. So, we watch the winch and we adjust it to get the perfect wrapping.
