The trip South was just as exciting as I imagined it would be. We came back to the CDC and got all out gear. We have to wear the ECW (extreme cold weather gear) on the plane. It's not that cold, but towards the end they regulate the temperature in the plane closer to surface temp--maybe to help the equipment adjust? Before we could load up we went through a briefing (first of many!) and then security.

We got our lunches and boarded the C-17 Globemaster. Inside were three large balloon crates, three large dewars of liquid helium, a big propeller and more.

Our C-5 Galazy on skisThis plane was huge! Like a big building inside and a bigger one from the outside. Very cool

Center of gravity marking on a balloon crateThis center of gravity marking is really important when loading and stowing gear. Physics!

Right before takeoff I was a little nervous about everything but the crew and other passengers were really great. I just kept thinking of that pressurized gas... but evidently it was more relaxed than I was.

Ms. Shirey nervous before takeoffI was a little hesitant at takeoff... liquid helium dewars on board...Maybe because of the nonflammable but pressurized helium?

Finally we were airborne and on the way. The crew let me head up into the cockpit for some pics. There were five guys up there alone plus three working with us in the cargo bay. We were in great hands.

Eventually we crossed the sea ice and landed at McMurdo on the Ross Ice Shelf. After hopping off and getting our bearings we were sent into town. Stay tuned for my McMurdo Adventure!

Sea Ice!We saw sea ice and we knew we were getting close. De-planing at McMurdo StationThe red coats are coming! Everyone de-planed and took a good look around before rushing to our next briefing.
