Journal Entry

The remaining teacher and students are introduced below. On Friday we get to all meet face to face and begin our exploration of Arctic science!

Rikke JorgensenRikke Jorgensen is one of the teachers from Denmark.

Hi, my name is Rikke. (When trying to pronounce it, think Reggae without the “a” in the end.)

I’m 29, born and raised on Bornholm, which is a small island in the Baltic sea. I moved to the capital when I was 20 and started at the University of Copenhagen, where I studied geology. After 6 years in school, I went to Nuuk in Greenland to teach, and I fell in love with the job after my first class. Now I’m on my 4th year of teaching, and I can’t imagine anything better. After two years in Nuuk, I went back to Denmark, mostly because I missed my family, and because I had my little man waiting: An 8 week old Great Dane, who is now 1 year old and bigger than I thought they could get. Don’t get me started on him, because I won’t be able to stop!

I have been lucky enough to have been chosen to teach at the summer school for three years now. The first year, 2011, I was just a part of the Science Education Week days, and I got to go to the icecap which was cool, but me and heights are not the best combo, so I spent a lot of the time in a pressure chamber to get enough oxygen. But I did get to see a lot of the research, and those of you who are going, have something to look forward to. The second year, 2012, I was one of the teachers during the Field School, just like I am this year. It was so much fun to get to know all of the students, and we got to do some fantastic science. And I got a few of the students to think that rocks were cooler than plants, which will forever be my mission, so don’t listen to Kasper because he will try to tell you otherwise.

When we are in Kangerlussuaq and you need to know something about: rocks, minerals, glaciers, icebergs, landscapes, paleontology, or just other random trivia come see me...

And here are the students from Nuuk.

Michael BroMichael Bro is one of the students from the high school in Nuuk.

My name is Michael Bro. I live in Nuuk but I am originally from Ilulissat. Ilulissat town is known for the beautiful icefjord. The fjord was added to UNESCO’s World Heritage list in 2004.

As I am finishing up chemistry this year in GU Nuuk, I think that the 2 weeks in Kangerlussuaq with JSEP is a great opportunity to expand my knowledge in science. This would also be an awesome experience before starting my 3rd and last year at high school. And I think that this project is very exciting, as I always have been interested in science, how nature acts and the impact on our everyday life. When I finish high school I am planning to attend the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts to study architecture or design.

I enjoy travelling, sailing, hiking and anything I can do outside, but I also enjoy cooking, and the city life.

I look forward to this incredible experience and to be a part of the JSEP this summer!

Lana LovstromLana Lovstrom also attend the high school in Nuuk.

Hey, my name is Lana Løvstrøm. I was born in Maniitsoq, Greenland. I’m in my second year in High School (GU) Nuuk. In my spare time I like sailing with motor boat, hiking, fishing, skiing, hunting, play handball and being in nature. I want to go to Kangerlussuaq Science field school, because I want to learn more about melting ice, global warming and learn about more new things.

I have been also an exchange student in Norway for one year (2010-2011), it was exciting. So I’m very excited for summer! and meet new people.

John-Peter PetersenJohn-Peter Petersen is the third student at JSEP from the high school in Nuuk.

Hello everyone, my name is John-Peter Petersen, and I am 18. I was born in Maniitsoq (a town in Greenland) and I lived both in Maniitsoq and here in Nuuk (capital city in Greenland). I study at ‘GU Nuuk’ (gymnasie/high school/senior or whatever you call it). I spend most of my time with my friends and hang out with them and go to parties, at the local gym (fit &fun). I go to armwrestling (check our page on facebook (styrkeløft og armbrydning nuuk, https://www.facebook.com/styrkeogarm?fref=ts ).

I really want to study science or study to be a ship's officer, and I really can’t wait to spend time in Kangerlussuaq.
