Journal Entry

Today we Introduce the two JSEP 2014 students who attend the high school located in Nuuk, the capital of Greenland.

My name is Benjamin Hammeken, and I am a student from GU Nuuk. I want to go to KSFS because it sounds really educational, and science is my favorite subject.

I think it is a great idea that young people with the same interests, from three different countries come together and get to know each other. I still don’t know what I am going to do after GU Nuuk, but I think this trip to KSFS will help me a lot, finding an educational path for me to take in the future, maybe as a scientist.

One of the topics, which could be interesting to study in Kangerlussuaq, could be how the climate change will affect the permafrost. The whole airport is built on top of permafrost, even the big runway. If the permafrost melts what will happen to the runway, and the rest of the airport? The whole airport means a lot to Greenland’s air traffic. It is the most important airport for both domestic and international flights.

Also the climate change means a lot to Greenland’s future and development. It will influence the life everywhere. For better and worse. In the north the hunters are adapting to the climate change. The warmer weather gives them new opportunities in fishing, which means better living conditions and higher income. And in the south agriculture expands with new crops and new life stock. Resulting in less dependence from other countries’ import.

The climate change also affects the melting ice cap, so that the melt water can be used for energy. I think that the summer school will give me knowledge about the consequences of climate changes in Greenland. Therefore I really hope to participate in both KSFS and SEW.

Aviaaja PetersenAviaaja Petersen is a student at GU Nuuk.

My name is Aviaaja Petersen and I’m an 18-year-old girl from Nuuk. On June the 5th I’ll turn 19. I go at the gymnasium in Nuuk, in 2.Q, in the scientific class where I have math, biology, chemistry and physics as my main subjects.

The reason why I want to go to this trip is because I find science very interesting and I see this trip as an opportunity to increase my scientific knowledge and at the same time to improve my English. I think it would be very nice to experience how the scientists work and have an insight in their job. It’s also a good opportunity for me to get to meet people from all over the world, talk to them in English, work with them and improve my social skills. I see this trip as a once-in-a-lifetime-experience and I think it could help me find out what I want after GU and if I want to go the scientific way.

My parents are divorced and I live with my father with his new wife and my brother. I’m half Danish and half Greenlandic, so I go to Denmark at least two times a year to visit my family from my father’s side. I’ve been at a boarding school in Denmark for one year and after that I started on GU here in Nuuk in 2012. Now I’m on my second year in high school and I study mathematics, biology, chemistry and physics. I enjoy spending time in the nature; it’s so quiet and relieving.

In my spare time I hang out with my friends and family. When I want to relax I knit or paint. I’m looking forward to see you guys! It’s going to be so fun and interesting

No you should have the freedom not to. High school only helps people anyways.
