Beautiful Day!

David Lipson of San Diego State University left last night and will not be back until the beginning of August. However, a grad student from Stanford, Eric Slessarev, arrived to conduct his own field research here in Barrow. The other day I posted about the fog and I wanted to show a picture of how 'soupy' it can get when we have fog.

Shoreline FogFog on one of the bays. Not nearly as bad as foggy as it was earlier

Today, Ted, Eric, Elliot, and I ventured back out onto the tundra. It was an absolutely beautiful sunny day. A little chilly, mid-40s, but was brisk due to the wind. The temperature today was cool, but the sun made the cold temperatures manageable. Eric and Ted collected water samples along with pH and dissolved oxygen data while Elliot and I set-up equipment to take the readings Elliot's experiment. I placed the sensors at the ancient basin and we will start collecting the data from those sensors in the next few days.

"Ask the Team"

Someone on the "Ask the Team" part of my website asked about what other kinds of research is currently being conducted here in Barrow (if you have questions, feel free to ask me questions at any time!). Some of the other studies that are being conducted at this science base include: archaeological research, shoreline bird and migratory bird research, snowy owl research, plant and climate change research. I am hoping to be able to step in to at least some of these groups to learn more about other research being done in this complex polar region. I think it will be fun to "infiltrate" these groups for a day or two and see what I can learn. There are other research projects not affiliated with this science base and I will try and find more information about their research.

Wow, how did it get to be Saturday already?!?!?!?

Fact of the Day

In most places in the U.S., a lot of homes are heated by propane. Why can't propane be used to heat homes here in Barrow?

Inuit word of the day

Yesterday's Word: TakTuk = Fog! Did you get it right?

Today's Word: Imek - Hint: You need this to survive! What is the word of the day?
