Outreach Activities

The last few weeks have been a whorl-wind of visits to classrooms and libraries across the Sacramento area. My goals is to share the upcoming expedition with my community members. It's been really fun to show people where I'm going and what we are going to be doing. Both students and adults have such great questions; "What will you eat?" and "Where will you go to the bathroom?".

I have borrowed a set of ECW, or Extreme Cold Weather gear for students to model. Its very warm, even by Antarctica standards. Here in California where the temperatures have regularly reached 90°F, its a future polar scientist that braves the suit!

Its been very fun to see people’s reactions. My best friend said “Wait, you didn’t tell me you’re camping out down there!” The most frequently asked question is whether I will sleep in my ECW. The answer: No, I’ll be issued a very warm sleeping bag, so I’ll sleep with lighter layers on.
