Journal Entry

This week has been a whirlwind. I can't believe that I am leaving in a matter of hours and there is still so much to do. My week started out with a going away party with my friends and family. My entire family came over to my house for the occasion and they even wore their Polar TREC shirts.

This week was my last week at school for the next two months, so I spent a lot of time getting my students prepped for my expedition. We played with glacier goo to see how mountain glaciers and ice sheets move, we tried on extreme cold weather gear, and we watched some video clips on Antarctica so my students could see what Antarctica looks like.

A great video on shrinking glaciers with teacher resources and video streaming can be found at: http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/earth/extreme-ice.html

That might be too many layers for Michigan…Anthony wasn’t even recognizable when he tried on the extreme cold weather gear

I am the queen of procrastination and I am also a big Detroit Tigers fan. That is not a good combination to have this week. The Tigers are in a pennant race with the Minnesota Twins and I am supposed to be getting ready for Antarctica! I compromised and I only went to two games this week. Unfortunately, by the end of the week the Tigers blew a three game lead with only four games to play and now we are going into a single-game playoff on Tuesday. I will be somewhere over the Pacific Ocean when they play, so they had better win.

In the last hours before I leave, I am trying to make some sense out of everything that I need to pack. I am crossing my fingers and maybe my toes too that it will all fit into my giant duffel bag

SmileSmile Organized ChaosI would like to think that there is some hope that it will all fit in one bag :)
