They anticipate we’ll hit the first parts of the marginal ice zone in the next couple hours. We are rounding the last island we’ll see for a while, between the Kara and Laptev Seas. And then reconnect with the Polarstern and head north together into the more concentrated sea ice. Having left Homer, Alaska less than 2 weeks ago, I’ve travelled more than 250 degrees east around the globe!

Last night, there were some bioluminescent organisms in the water. We’re actually trying to figure out what they are. We were in the eastern Barents Sea, deep water, cold water (probably about 2 C). The glowing blobs lasted a couple seconds each at least and appeared to be at least a couple cm large.
