A nice day up here, cool, misty, but not too windy. Today’s journal covers three quick topics that make this place special. First is the work of an archaeologist, second is the unique Arctic region, and third is the interesting people you meet. The journals are looking at smaller topics, the fine point of the trip these days. I have a couple of bigger pieces in the works, keep checking in and think of these as National Geographic versions, you know, just look at the pictures and captions.
Work Pictures
I was paperwork dude today. An important job but not very exciting. I still had fun, everyone kept bringing me pieces to look at!! The stadia rod takes a laser beam from the transit and reflects it back. Check out the three images of the same camera. Pretty cool!! The wood chips are really important for understanding what went on in this site. The problem is some are solid, some are smashed, and others are just spread out. Here's a collection of one wood piece. One of the students told me the name of this blue wood fungus and since I didn't write it down I forgot. Look close for the deep blue color, very nice. We have found a small handful of fish scales this summer. Another piece of the puzzle, what does it mean? We are pretty certain there is an ichthyologist (fish scientist) out there that can tell us the species of fish from the scale. One way or another, they are interesting.**Arctic Life Pictures **
Can you spot the seal head out in the water? It's fun to watch these animals swim on by. The kids grabbed this crab out of the water and brought it up to say Hi. They thought it was dead, then it tried to escape, they screamed, and we all laughed. Well, maybe not the crab. The crab did get placed back in the water safely. I can't stop checking out the iceberg sculptures, so many great shapes and designs.**Interesting People **
Two documentary film makers stopped by, helped out, shot footage, and reminded us that we are not the only wacky people in the world. The ride home is often a challenge. Tired, cold, worn, …. , the commute can be beautiful though. At other times it can be awful. Just what kind of a day today was? Look at the dirt on the glasses, coat, face, …. Yuck!I am amazed that I get to have this much fun, discovering, exploring, and learning about a wild place. I feel very lucky to have this opportunity. It is not a picnic, nor a vacation, but it is certainly not dull!!
