Languages are bridges to the world

High school students in Punta Arenas 12-7-06

Make sure that you take advantage of your parents’, grandparents’ knowledge and keep Spanish and your cultural heritage alive. Demand from the school districts to offer Spanish writing, Spanish literature, Spanish history and Spanish art starting in elementary school. Yes, you have to learn English too, English literature and English writing. Treat both languages and cultures with respect and separate. "Spenglish” is not a language. However, speaking with an accent is accepted, no problem, normal and welcome.

Senior pictures in Punta Arenas

And for the rest of us, like my favorite Asian students, Germans, Chinese, Koreans, Alaskans, Hisafrican …it is true -Keep language and heritage living and respect each other. Special greetings to Hai and my ”Overachiever” Vanessa (don’t worry- no online homework until 2007J) and to all our exchange students at Homer Hanna High School.

Being bilingual opens you the doors to the world. Applause to all of you which are learning a 3rd language. Special praise to our German students and your leader Mr. Hageman and his big helper for spoken German, Mr. Hoffmann (Yes, I can be patriotic too J) and greetings and best wishes from Mrs. Vollmer -your old French teacher. She misses you.

Look at the photo of students in Punta Arenas, Chile. They had assembled at the monument to have their senior pictures taken. They are 17 and 18 years old.

How much fun it would be to teach some physics here...All of us in the same class? Great.

The boys are younger. Freshmen?

*Andre' says hi to you! *

Alexander loved our "Pengy el Pengüino - the Antarctic Cowboy" He is behind the counter of the museum store in Punta Arenas. Hi to Mrs. Kendall's 4th grade class at Hudson Elementary in Brownsville, TX.

This is Mrs. Kendall's 4th grade class in Brownsville, TX at Hudson Elementary.

They named the little world traveling penguin from TX "Pengy el Pengüino - the Antarctic Cowboy" and asked me to take him to Antarctica. Pengy el Pengüino offers to share his advantures with all Elementary kids...

With the help of our Spansish speaking parents Pengy el Pengüino was spelled correctly.

My High School seniors have a mascot too. More about this later. Rumors...

There were rumors at Hanna HS that Mrs. Kaden has a penguin in an ice chest in her room… I believe the seniors in the photo are partially responsible for it.

Languages are bridges to the world

Elva Yanez's (my student at Hanna HS) drawing of Hongjie Xie (China), Mrs. Kaden (Germany/TX) and Burcu Cicek (Turkey) working on the Oden observing sea ice and Dr. Stephen Ackley (US) on the computer at UT San Antonio receiving the data.

Think about it. Your physics teacher,
