Today is officially the first day of summer! It is also the longest day of the year. By that, I mean daylight hours. As we move through the summer, days will become shorter and shorter until the winter solstice, or shortest day of the year. In the Arctic this time of year has a midnight sun, which means it doesn't really get dark. This is because Earth is tilted and the entire area inside the Arctic Circle is exposed to sunlight as Earth rotates throughout the day.
Here is a cool time lapse video that we took last night at Toolik Field Research Station, before the weather gets bad tonight. You can see the sun barely kiss the horizon, but it never dips below it, and then it rises again.
