Journal Entry

We went looking for muskox and we were not disappointed. These guys were hanging out along the Dalton Highway, eating away at the grass and willows, totally unphased by us taking pictures and video of them from the road.

Muskox can weigh 600- 900 pounds and live in large groups up to 20 individuals. Despite their name, they're more closely related to goats than oxen. They have thick warm fur that consists of an undercoat called qiviut. They lose this undercoat in the summer and if you walk around areas that muskox previously roamed through, you can find qiviut clinging to the willows, just make sure there aren't any muskox anywhere nearby. The qiviut can be spun into thread or yarn and then made into hats that are great at keeping your head warm.

Watch the video below with some of our muskox footage.
