Journal Entry

No one told me when I was learning about this field experience what a fantastic prospect it would be to improve my wardrobe. I mean how many women do you know who can pass up the opportunity to get a really great pair of shoes to match their newest outfit. The folks at CH2M Hill sent me a gorgeous camouflage duffle bag full of the latest in field camp fashion. So, for those of you out there who like to look good even when you are chest deep in an excavation site, well this entry is for you.

Of course you are going to want to start with some basic black. This expedition weight base layer of DuoFold thermal wear is just the thing, in fact it goes with just about everything. Complete your base layer with some comfy, moisture wicking hiking socks and you are ready for all kinds of weather.

Base layers are key to being comfortable in cold climates.Starting with a moisture wicking base layer keeps the chill off while still letting you look cool.

Next, you are going to top off your base layer with some fashionable yet practical items. Work pants and hiking boots along with some fleece in basic black help round out the look as you head off to the work site. Adding a little attitude is optional, but if you think of the path to the excavation site as a runway it just helps you carry the look with style.

Work clothes can still be worn with style.Even jeans and Polartec can make a fashion statement.

Anyone who knows anything about fashion knows that accessories can really make or break an outfit. These fashion forward gaiters and sun hat add just the right touch to an otherwise less than noteworthy ensemble. The gaiters in basic black coordinate with the jacket and add balance to the look. The sun hat, although practical is really known for its high fashion punch.

Fashion is a consideration no matter the weather. Let's face it a great piece of outerwear can be as practical as it is stylish and rainwear is no exception. This outfit keeps you looking good in torrential rain while the steel-toed boots allow you to maintain your footing while on the trail. No matter that they weigh three pounds each, true fashionistas find the extra weight worth it for a total look. Of course, no outfit is complete without its accessories, in this case, neoprene gloves.

Stylish in all kinds of weather.Foul weather is no problem with this outfit.

Once the rain settles down and the humidity rises, your fashion needs to consider the onslaught of insects. Another stylish item that is a must for your wardrobe would be the bug shirt. It allows airflow, to keep you looking and feeling great in your insect swarmed environment, while keeping bugs at bay. Round out the outfit with a pair of fashionable leather gloves and you are ready for a day at the peninsula.

Bug ShirtMosquitos and Black flies are no match for this elite bug shirt.

Understated elegance is the only phrase to describe the official Bug Bucket. When a bug shirt is just too dressy for the occasion, the bug bucket hat is just the thing. It keeps the sun off your face and the insects don't have a chance. Add some cotton liner gloves for color and you are ready to dig.

Some other head gear that help complete your frontier look are the wind stopper hat, complete with ear flaps and drawstring, a real show stopper and the fleece hat which goes great on cold mornings when the air is still but, brisk. Either accessory coordinates with your field gear and adds a little color.

Along with your runway walk and high style fashion, there is gear to consider. A good internal frame backpack goes a long way to authenticate your wilderness look. Some hat, glove and gaiter accessories add a little punch without having you fall into the fashion faux pas of over accessorizing. Remember minimalist is the way to go in casual settings.

Internal Frame PackProper accessorizing is key to a successful outfit.

People who understand fashion know that the finishing touch to any outfit is just the right bag. When an oversized frame pack is too much, a daypack with a punch of color can really save the day (and the outfit). Add a Nalgene bottle, bug repellent and sunscreen and this look is a winner.

No fashion line would be complete without eveningwear. Let's face it at the end of the day when you are rubbing elbows with people who have been in a very big, very dirty hole, you want to look great. You can't go wrong with basic black. It's simple but classic. The fleece jacket and pants have a fantastic silhouette and those wick away socks are the essential accessory that truly goes with everything and this ensemble is no exception.

I hope this entry helps you realize that fashion in Kamchatka is more than just about style. It is a true example of form following function. If you really want to be looking cool, it's all about thinking warm. And with these red hot separates and some coordinating know how, you'll be known as the archeologist who everybody digs being seen with.
