Journal Entry

Sometimes the unknown can be very intriguing. We speculate about what it will be like and anticipate new experiences. I am talking about my trip today to Rowan University, where I am attending Freshman Orientation with my daughter, Beth Ann. A 5 AM departure and smooth trip to the southern part of our state and there we were at the school. Using our campus map we make our way to the dorm where she will be spending the night. As we walk closer to the building, a huddle of yellow shirts are clumped together, it looks like a large swarm of bees buzzing at the hive entrance. These are the students who will be leading the new freshman to their various activities and lectures for the next two days.

As we approach the group, they scatter to their stations, check us in and show her to her temporary dorm room. They are each wearing a bright gold t-shirt emblazoned with the Rowan University logo and khaki shorts. They are so cheerful and it is so great to see my daughter’s face light up with the anticipation of the day. This is truly a new adventure for her. One that I hope will be truly amazing.

I realize that not everyone wants to go to the remote wilderness of the Kamchatka Peninsula. In fact, I had a friend tell me that her idea of roughing it is staying in a hotel that doesn’t have a pool. But, let’s face it – adventure is fun. It’s something to look forward to, something to hope for and embrace with an open spirit. I believe everyone should have a secret adventure they’d like to embark on and hope to experience. It would give us all something to look forward to.

I challenge you to think about what your amazing adventure would be. Even better, I challenge you to make a part of each day have just a little bit of adventure. It’s sure to make you look forward to something every day. And that would be amazing.
