Dr. Bret-Harte and Emily Reast measure the size of a site that we will harvest plants from in the coming daysDr. Bret-Harte and Emily Reast measure the size of a research site

Today we drove to a site located about two hours outside of the Toolik field station to establish plots for study. The plots contain a mix of shrubs including a species of willow and alder. When we return, we will harvest the shrubs found in these plots. The work was very labor-intensive and involved walking through high, dense brush as we tried to measure and mark the plots. The mosquitoes who were everywhere and I was glad to have my bug shirt on.

There were many mosquitoes that harrased us during our work. Mosquitoes

We left Toolik around 10 am and did not return until 7 pm, so it was a very long day. The views, however, were stunning and I learned so much about identifying local plants. I even got to see the tracks of a grizzly bear that had been observed walking through the site a few weeks ago.
