The International Gateway to Antarctica!
Australia Day!
Hobart, Tasmania
The monument in Hobart Harbor. The Aurora Australis in Hobart harbor. The icebreaker that recently rescued the trapped Russian vessel you've been hearing about. We are about to get underway! All the members of the party have been working long days, prepping for our 6 weeks on The N.B Palmer! I spent time with the great people that make up the MT's today. That's short for Marine Technicians. Boy is my back sore! I'll be doing a few journals about their vital role to the expedition next and introduce them also.
My new MT buddies.Since we are leaving in a few days I wanted to talk a little about Hobart and the great folks that live there. This beautiful city has been our staging area. Hobart has been described as a "city built on the pain and toil of yesteryear English convicts" as Tasmania was at one time a penal colony. It is now a city of yachts, Georgian estates and great museums. More importantly for us it has become the major port for research vessels departing to the remote East Antarctic region. We were graciously given a reception by His Excellency the Honourable Peter Underwood, the Governor of Tasmania, and Mrs. Frances Underwood. It was quite an honour. That will be another journal soon.
The Port of Hobart from the NB Palmer. Here is some homework.
See If you can find Hobart, Tasmania on a map and its proximity to Antarctica. I hope I hear back from you by going to the Ask the Team link. I can't wait to get underway!
