Meet the Marine Technicians

Hard workers, working in tough conditions!

As I mentioned in my last journal I had the pleasure of spending time with the Marine Technicians. Called MT’s for short, these folks flat out work. (Boy is my back sore!) During the couple of hours I helped they welded, assembled, fabricated, fixed and hauled all sorts of science and cruise related equipment.

As you can see they would make their high school shop teacher or mechanical engineering professor jealous! Now image all these jobs being done on the open stern of the ship. Then image the ship in open seas with frigid temperatures, rolling waves and hollowing winds. That’s their office, that’s what they do. I was lucky. It was cool and sunny with the ship in port.

I wish I had a technology program when I was in school. These folks are the epitome of combining science, engineering, math and science in a practical manner. They are invaluable to the success of the expedition. Thanks to all of you. To those that are leaving the ship from the past expedition good luck in your next mission. To those that will be sailing with me. I’m available to help. Just let me grab some aspirin first! If you have any questions about being a marine technician go to the ask the team link. Tomorrow we sail!
