Where in the World is Flat Stanley?
A little geography test!
The students welcoming Flat Stanley aboard. We will need to make him a float coat of his own!One of our friends from Skaneateles, NY graciously sent along his friend called Flat Stanley. I thought I would introduce him. Flat Stanley has travelled the world but never to Antarctica. Occasionally during the cruise I will update his photo and location. Presently we are approximately 430 nautical miles (Latitude -59 32 .29 and 146 47 .90 Longitude) from the continent of Antarctica. Can you find it on a map? Our first intended destination will be the Mertz Glacier.
The Mertz Glacier. If you can find map of Antarctica locate the magnetic NOT the geographic South Pole. The Mertz glacier is just to the left. Find It?
The Totten Glacier.Ok Now that you found the Mertz follow the coast to the right heading to the Sabrina Coast and see if you can find the Totten Glacier. I'll give you a clue. Look for the Casey Base which is an Australian Station and air field. Good Luck! Now you have the general area the research on the cruise will be done. This expedition has some of the finest scientists and equipment on board. They will be gathering vital data that will be used to answer some of the questions and concerns about Antarctic geology and oceanography. Everybody is working hard and excited! I'll be sure to keep you posted.
