Welcome to the ‘Get Fit’ – Antarctica Challenge

During my last expedition to Antarctica, I thought I knew exactly what I needed to do to ‘get fit’ for my adventure. Boy was I wrong! Where did these sore muscles come from, I asked myself. But my aches and pains weren’t just from working in the field - carrying the equipment and safety gear; it was from the weight of our clothing – especially the boots. The ‘bunny boots’ weighed about 3 pounds each. While that may not sound like a lot – by the end of a long day your legs felt every bit of it!

This time I know what to expect and I’m working even harder to get fit for my expedition. Now here’s a twist, the Weddell seal team and I want you to join us in this process.

Are you up for the challenge?

With this challenge the team and I ask you to… Get Fit – your mind, your body – or both - and travel virtually with us to Antarctica.

Now you might be asking yourself… just how far is it to Antarctica?

Well, we’ve calculated the distance between the Pink Palace Museum and the lab at McMurdo Station – it is a whopping 8,764 miles. That’s as the crow flies, if the crow could fly that far. Wow - that’s a long trip!

The Challenge

Now…here’s the challenge! For every minute you ‘get fit’ through physical exercise or studying about science, you will travel a ‘virtual’ mile toward Antarctica. After every 60 minutes/miles you complete you will reach a new milestone – and you’ll love all the milestones. There will be 147 on your journey and at each ‘virtual’ stop you will discover interesting snippets about health, science, math and/or history.
