Preparing to work with seals…

…is no quick and easy task! So, what have we been up to over the past couple of days?

We've been busy unpacking, setting up the lab, packing for our daily excursions and taking classes – safety first.

Since a pictures worth a thousand words, I thought I’d let the photos do the talking. And don’t miss the video at the end of this journal to see the scurry of the pace around here.

lab set upBruce Bulkfigure and Molly Minifig have been very helpful setting up the lab. UnloadingThe team unloaded two very large supply boxes. Greg, Amy and Roxanne are opening the first container. Gear pick upWe also had to pick up two truckloads of gear. Snowmobile trainingSnowmobile training. Looks like Bruce Bulkfigure and Molly Minifig are ready! Preparing gauze packsPrepping to work with the seals. Here I am preparing gauze packs. TripodTightening the bolts on our tripod. This will be used to weigh the seal, so it needs to work properly. Food pullShopping for our daily field lunches at the ‘food pull’. They have an entire warehouse full of food. This was so much fun shopping! Basket of foodWhat don’t you see in my basket? No Snickers®. Oh no! How will I ever make it through the season without my Snickers®?

What adjustments have you made to living in the cold?

Alex Eilers

Layers, layers, layers... I dress in layers. It has been fairly nice but it is very cold and windy. My skin is very dry also - so I'm trying to stay hydrated.
